Septic, Sewer and Drain Services in Bristol

Bristol sits where the Little Elkhart River meets the St. Joseph River, a few miles south of the Michigan line. Much of the ground around town is fast-draining sand, with a high water table in the low spots. The federal soil survey rates nearly all of the town's mapped land as very limited for septic drain fields. Sand filters wastewater poorly, and wet ground leaves a drain field little room to work.

Bristol is part of our service area, under 20 road miles east of our office in Mishawaka. ASAP Poop handles septic tank pumping and septic repair for homes and businesses around Bristol. We also put in new systems and work on the sewer lines that tie into the town's mains. Call (574) 254-7667, and our office staff will set up a time.

Town sewer or septic: which one serves your Bristol home?

The Town of Bristol runs a sewer utility for homes and businesses in and around town. Lift stations move the flow to a treatment plant by the St. Joseph River. Past the reach of that sewer, a home treats its own wastewater with a septic tank and a drain field.

The town's 2025 newsletter laid out a two-year build with a new wastewater treatment plant and new water mains. That work covers the town's side of the pipe. The line from your house to the main is often the owner's to fix. The town office at Town Hall can tell you where its part ends.

Inside town, we work on the sewer line and the drains that feed it. Drain cleaning or hydro jetting opens up a clogged line. When roots or a broken pipe block the flow for good, we handle sewer line repair and replacement.

Why is the ground around Bristol hard on drain fields?

Two sandy soils cover more than a third of the land in town: Bristol loamy sand and Tyner loamy sand. Soil scientists rate both as excessively drained. Wastewater runs through them fast, before the soil can filter much of it.

Low ground brings the opposite problem. In the soil survey, the Gilford soils around town carry ponding and a shallow water table. A drain field in wet ground has little dry soil to treat wastewater. Sewage can then pool in the yard or back up into the house.

Around Bristol, pumping on a schedule keeps solids in the tank from washing out into the field. When the yard over the field stays wet or drains slow down, we check the tank and field first. Then we put the drain field repair quote in writing. If sewage comes up through a floor drain or a toilet, call (574) 254-7667 for emergency septic service.

Older homes in town, newer homes in Washington Township

Bristol was platted in 1835, one of the oldest towns in Elkhart County. The town's own history says it began as two villages, Bristol and Sydneyham. Census Bureau estimates show roughly a third of the town's homes were built before 1960.

Older houses often sit on older sewer lines, where roots push into cracks and loose joints. A main line that keeps backing up after each cleaning often points to damage in the pipe.

By the same Census estimates, Washington Township runs newer, with a median build year in the early 1980s. Past the town sewer, the tank and the drain field are the owner's to keep up. Building a new house on an old lot? The county allows the old system only with a permit on record and enough capacity, among other conditions.

What does a new or replacement septic system near Bristol take?

Replacing a failed tank or drain field takes a permit from the Elkhart County Health Department. Its environmental health office in Goshen works under the state rule, 410 IAC 6-8.3, and a county ordinance. The county sizes each system by the number of bedrooms in the home.

For a new system, a soil scientist checks the ground before the county will consider a permit. For a system already in failure, county staff can do that soil check instead. The standard system is a tank with a trench of stone or gravel-less chambers. Where a site rules that out, the county calls for a pump-assisted design, such as an elevated sand mound.

State law calls for an Indiana 811 locate request at least two full working days before a septic dig. We handle septic system installation, the excavation included, once the county sets the requirements in writing.

Bristol FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Bristol

A few of the questions we hear most around Bristol. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (574) 254-7667

Is my Bristol home on town sewer or a septic system?
Check your town utility bill. A sewer charge means the house ties into the Town of Bristol sewer. No sewer charge, or no town bill at all, most likely means a septic tank in the yard. The Elkhart County Health Department takes septic record lookup requests, which can turn up a permitted system's drawing.
What does septic work cost around Bristol?
It comes down to the job and the ground. A pump-out is priced on the tank size and how hard the lids are to reach. A new or replacement system is priced on the design the county requires and the size of the house. We look at the job and put the quote in writing before any work starts.
Who issues septic permits for homes in and around Bristol?
The Elkhart County Health Department does, through its environmental health office in Goshen. That office reviews the plans and inspects the installation. For a town sewer hookup, start with the town office at Town Hall. When a job needs a permit, we point you to the right office.
My Bristol home is on the town sewer. Can you still help?
Yes, the sewer line from the house to the main is work we handle, along with the drains inside. Drain cleaning and hydro jetting open up clogged lines. Pipe lining can fix some damaged lines without a full dig. When a line needs replacing, we dig it up and put in new pipe.
Our septic system near Bristol failed a home-sale inspection. What now?
Start with a repair quote. We stay on the repair side of a home sale and leave the inspection to an independent company. We look at the tank and the drain field, then put the repair or replacement quote in writing. Call (574) 254-7667.
