Purdue Extension tells Indiana homeowners to have a professional pump the tank every three to five years. The St. Joseph County Department of Health gets more specific. A home with two people should pump every five years, and a home with six people every other year.
Heavy use of a garbage disposal changes the schedule. The county says to pump twice as often in that case. The county also ties the timing to the size of the tank and the habits of the household.
Waiting for a backup costs more. By the time sewage backs up into the house, solids have already started flowing into the drain field. The county warns that this can do very expensive damage to the field. Our office can put your next pump-out on the calendar now.
First, the crew has to find the tank. Not sure where yours is? The St. Joseph County Department of Health keeps septic permit records back to 1970. A copy may show where the tank and the drain field sit.
Next comes the lid. Indiana's septic rule calls for a riser to ground level on new tanks. That puts the lid at the surface, where it is easy to reach. Many older tanks have lids buried in the yard, and those get dug up first.
Then the crew runs a hose from the vacuum truck to the tank. The truck pulls out the sludge on the bottom and the scum on top. The county health department tells homeowners to ask whether a company removes all the solids. We pump and clean the tank, so the solids leave with the liquid.
Pumping empties the tank, but it does not repair broken parts or a worn-out drain field. Purdue Extension names other causes of septic failure, like tree roots in the trenches or a burst pipe.
Slow drains and gurgling pipes can also point to a clogged effluent filter. The Indiana Department of Health warns that a clogged filter can back sewage into the house. Indiana's septic rule says the filter gets cleaned or swapped at least every time the tank is cleaned.
Drains that back up again soon after a pump-out point to trouble in the pipes or the drain field. That calls for septic repair, and we put the repair quote in writing. If the drain field is worn out, the answer may be a new septic system.
