Many Granger homes run on a private well and a septic system on the same lot. County health officials have long known that some Granger wells are contaminated by septic systems close by. Much of the town also sits on sandy outwash that drains fast, with wet, low ground in between. Add houses built mostly between 1970 and 1999, and plenty of tanks and drain fields here are getting old.
ASAP Poop offers septic services in Mishawaka and the towns around it, and Granger sits just to the north. Granger is part of our service area and one of the towns where we work the most. Our pump trucks handle septic tank pumping here, and we repair failing systems and put in new ones. Call (574) 254-7667, and our office staff will set up the visit.
Tell us what your septic system, sewer line or drain needs and where the property is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.

The USDA soil survey rates 97 percent of Granger's mapped land as very limited for septic absorption fields. Two soil series cover the most ground. Tyner loamy sand formed in sandy outwash and is excessively drained. Gilford sandy loam is poorly drained and stays wet.
In the fast sand, the survey flags poor filtering. Wastewater can reach the groundwater before the soil cleans it. In the wet ground, the water table is the problem. On nearly 3 in 10 acres, it rises to within about a foot of the surface during the year.
Low ground along Juday Creek is mapped as wet, poorly drained Gilford and Maumee soils. Those limits shape every new drain field in Granger. The county sets the minimum design from the soil report for each lot. We handle the excavation for septic system installation and replacement here.
All of Granger sits over the St. Joseph Aquifer System. The EPA lists it as a sole source aquifer. That means it supplies at least half the drinking water for the area it serves.
Many Granger homes draw from a private well on the same lot as the septic tank. The St. Joseph County Department of Health warns that what goes into a septic system eventually reaches the groundwater. Pumping the tank on schedule helps keep sludge out of the drain field.
You can pick up septic tank treatment products at our office in Mishawaka. The office can also set up a pumping schedule that fits your tank and your household.
Granger is an unincorporated community in Harris Township and Clay Township, with 30,337 people at the 2020 Census. It runs north to the Michigan state line. Nearly every home is a single-family house, and Census estimates put the median build year at 1986. A system installed with a house that age is close to 40 years old.
Septic permits come from the St. Joseph County Department of Health, Environmental Health. A permit is required to install, replace or repair a septic system. The application includes a soil report from a soil scientist. The department reviews it and sets the minimum design.
County inspectors check the work before it is covered. The system goes into use after the final inspection passes. County Code 51 and the state rule, 410 IAC 6-8.3, set the standards. Building permits in Granger go through the St. Joseph County/South Bend Building Department.
St. Joseph County's property transfer rules call for a septic inspection on sales inside the St. Joseph Aquifer System. Granger sits entirely inside it. The rule skips homes that sold or got a new septic system in the past 15 years. Results go to the buyer at least three days before closing.
Homes on a private well also need a water test before closing. It checks for total coliform bacteria, E. coli, nitrates and arsenic. Homes on city water show a water bill instead.
We leave the sale inspection to an independent inspection company that does not do repairs. If your system fails, we put the septic repair quote in writing.
