Goshen splits between city sewer and septic. Much of the Maple City drains into 147.80 miles of city sewer. Past the city line, many homes with a Goshen address run on a septic tank and a drain field. When a drain backs up, the fix depends on which system sits under your yard.

Goshen is the Elkhart County seat, and its courthouse stands downtown on Main Street. The city grew from 31,719 people in 2010 to 34,517 in 2020, by the Census count. About half of its homes were built before 1980, by Census Bureau estimates.
About 18 percent of the city's homes date to 1939 or earlier. An older house may still drain through the sewer line it was built with. Old lines can crack, and tree roots grow in through the cracks.
Our sewer line repair work covers the line from your house to the city main. When a line is past fixing, we replace it. The City of Goshen answers questions about the public main itself.
Inside the city, Volinia and Bainter are the most common soils on USDA soil maps. Both drain well, with loamy soil over sandy layers left by melting glaciers. In the wider Goshen area, Crosier loam is the most common soil. It drains slowly and stays wet near the surface for part of the year.
The USDA rates most land in and around Goshen as very limited for septic drain fields. In the sandy layers, wastewater can seep through before the soil cleans it. In the wetter loams, the water table can sit close to the surface. Goshen's own city water comes from wells, so the city keeps a wellhead protection plan.
Elkhart County requires a soil boring before it permits a new system. The county uses the results to set the system type and size. Some lots need an elevated sand mound or a flood-dosed system. Our septic system installation work follows the county's written requirements for the lot.
Septic permits for Goshen-area properties come from the Elkhart County Health Department. Its environmental health office sits in the county Public Services Building on Elkhart Road in Goshen. The office works from Indiana's residential septic rule, 410 IAC 6-8.3, and county ordinance 2012-153. Elkhart County's September 2026 permit report lists six septic permits for Goshen addresses, both new systems and repairs.
For a new system, a soil scientist bores the lot first. The county then sets minimum requirements by the number of bedrooms. For a failing system, county staff or a soil scientist can do the boring. A repair permit is good for one year, and a new-construction permit for two.
The county also sets distances. A water well must sit at least 50 feet from any part of a septic system. The tank must sit at least 10 feet from the foundation. Before a septic dig, Indiana law calls for an 811 locate request at least two full working days ahead.
Goshen's wastewater department asks residents to flush only human waste and toilet paper. Wipes and grease are on its do-not-flush list. They can clog your own line before they ever reach the city main.
We clear clogged drains and main sewer lines with drain cleaning and hydro jetting. Hydro jetting sends high-pressure water down the line to cut through grease and roots. For homes with a pump chamber and for businesses, we also service lift stations.
Sewage backups and septic alarms do not wait for a weekday. Our emergency septic service takes weekend calls from Goshen. Call (574) 254-7667, and the office or the on-call crew answers.
