A lift station is a tank with a pump that moves wastewater uphill when gravity cannot. At a home, it can be a pump chamber behind the septic tank. Its pump sends the liquid out to a mound or a drain field. At a business, a lift station can push sewage from the building up to the sewer. ASAP Poop provides lift station service for homes and businesses across St. Joseph County and Elkhart County.
Our office is in Mishawaka, and our crews pump and clean pump chambers and lift stations. If an alarm goes off or a pump stops keeping up, we look for the cause. Plugged lines get cleared with hydro jetting. The septic tank in front of a pump chamber still needs regular septic tank pumping. You get the quote in writing before any work starts.

A lift station pump sits near the bottom of a tank and pushes wastewater up to a higher point. Float switches ride on the liquid and tell the pump when to start and stop.
Indiana's residential septic rule, 410 IAC 6-8.3, calls a home pump chamber a dosing tank. Under the rule, elevated sand mounds and dosed trench systems run on a pump in a dosing tank. Each dosing tank needs a high water alarm set above the tank's design high water mark. The alarm must be audible and visible, on a separate circuit from the pump.
A business lift station often takes sewage straight from the building. Its pumps sit in a tank called the wet well. For the lift station plans it reviews, the Indiana Department of Health calls for pumps that alternate automatically. It also calls for an alarm on a separate circuit that sounds with any pump failure.
When the alarm sounds, the liquid in the tank has risen past the high water mark. The pump may have stopped, or it may be falling behind. A pump that runs and runs, or one that never kicks on, points to trouble too.
We start by pumping the tank down so the pump and floats are in plain view. Buildup on a float can keep the pump from starting or stopping. A plugged line can back the tank up even while the pump runs. We clean out the buildup and clear the line with a jetter.
Some trouble sits outside the tank. Indiana's rule keeps the controls, other than the level sensors, outside the pump chamber. A tripped breaker or a fault in the control panel is work for an electrician. If the drain field is failing, the fix falls under septic repair.
The EPA says septic systems with pumps and float switches should get a check more often, generally once a year. A lift station that takes kitchen grease can need more frequent visits. We can set a pumping schedule that matches how fast yours builds up.
Indiana's septic rule lists the frost line at 60 inches in both St. Joseph County and Elkhart County. The pipe out of a pump chamber has to drain after each dose unless it runs below that depth. A line that holds water above the frost line can freeze.
The rule also calls for risers to grade over a buried pump chamber. They have to be big enough to clean the tank and maintain the floats and pump. Keep those lids clear of snow piles and landscaping so we can open them.
