Past the end of the Middlebury town sewer, every home needs its own septic system. That covers many farms and country homes in Middlebury Township and York Township. Much of that ground is sand that drains too fast to filter wastewater well. Low ground along the Little Elkhart River stays wet, and a drain field there can back up in spring.
Middlebury is part of the ASAP Poop service area, and our office sits in Mishawaka. Here we handle septic tank pumping for homes and businesses past the town sewer. When a system starts to fail, our septic repair work covers the tank and the drain field. Call (574) 254-7667, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Middlebury runs its own sewer system. The town's wastewater department lists more than 28 miles of sewer mains and twelve lift stations. All of it feeds the town's treatment plant.
The 2020 Census counted about 1,400 homes inside the town limits. Middlebury Township and York Township to the north held about 4,500 homes in all. So about two of every three homes in the two townships sit outside the town limits, many on septic.
By Census estimates, about one home in four in the 46540 ZIP code was built before 1970. Homes built before 1967 needed no septic permit in Elkhart County, so the county has no drawings for them.
The federal soil survey maps most of the land around Middlebury as sandy ground. Bristol loamy sand alone covers about 40 percent of the ground within a few miles of town. The survey calls it excessively drained, so water runs through it fast.
Water that moves this fast gets little filtering before it reaches the ground water. That is one reason the survey rates about 95 percent of this ground as very limited for a drain field.
Along the Little Elkhart River, the survey maps a strip of very poorly drained soil that floods often. In low spots, the water table rises in spring. On about a quarter of the land near town, it comes within a foot of the surface. A drain field in ground that wet has nowhere to send the water.
That is why the county starts every new system with a soil boring. When a site rules out a standard trench, the county may require a flood-dosed system or an elevated sand mound. If your lot needs a new septic system, the boring results shape what we put in.
The Elkhart County Health Department issues septic permits for Middlebury, through its environmental health office in Goshen. The county works under Indiana's septic rules and its own septic ordinance. Every septic tank and drain field needs that permit before it goes in.
For a new home, a soil scientist bores the lot first. County staff review the results and send the minimum requirements in writing, sized to the number of bedrooms. For a failing system, county staff can do the soil check for the repair. A new system permit stays good for 2 years, and a repair permit for 1 year.
Distances matter on a country lot. The county requires at least 50 feet between a private well and any part of a septic system. The tank has to sit at least 10 feet from the house foundation. Before a septic dig, Indiana law requires notice to Indiana 811 at least two full working days ahead.
Homes on the town sewer still have their own line, the pipe from the house to the town main. Roots and age can clog that pipe or crack it. About one home in eight inside the town limits dates from 1939 or earlier, by Census estimates.
When drains in an older house keep backing up, that line is a common suspect. We clear the clog, and when the pipe itself has failed, we quote the sewer line repair.
The town's wastewater department asks residents to keep wipes out of the toilet, even wipes labeled flushable. That advice protects a septic tank just as well.
