Septic repair starts with finding the part that failed. Trouble often shows up as a slow drain, a sewage smell, a basement backup or a soggy yard. ASAP Poop handles septic tank repair and drain field repair in Mishawaka and across St. Joseph County and Elkhart County. If sewage is coming up into the house right now, start with emergency septic service.
We look for the repair first. A broken baffle or a crushed drain field pipe is a repair job. When a tank or a drain field is past saving, we say so and quote a replacement septic system. Either way, we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

A septic tank holds the waste from the house while solids sink as sludge and grease floats as scum. The inlet baffle guides waste down into the tank. The outlet baffle keeps sludge and scum in the tank and out of the drain field. When it breaks, solids wash out and start to clog the field.
Many tanks also have an effluent filter at the outlet. It catches fine solids, and when it clogs, water can back up toward the house. Cracked lids let in rainwater and roots. Risers bring the lids up to the surface, so the tank is easy to reach at every pump-out.
Roots follow water into a tank through cracks and loose joints. Inside, they can block the outlet and slow the whole system. We find where the roots got in and quote the repair the tank needs.
The drain field spreads water from the tank through buried pipes into the soil. The soil does the last of the treatment. A field fails when solids clog it or when the ground holds too much water. Roots and heavy vehicles can also damage the pipes.
The ground here is hard on drain fields. USDA soil surveys rate most of the land in Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart and Goshen as very limited for drain fields. In Mishawaka and Granger, much of the ground is sandy and filters poorly. Most land in Nappanee and Wakarusa has a water table within a foot of the surface part of the year.
Drain field repair starts with why the field quit. The work means digging. Indiana law calls for an Indiana 811 locate request at least two full working days ahead. We find the cause, then quote the repair or the replacement in writing.
In St. Joseph County, the county's property transfer rules call for a septic inspection on some home sales. Buyers in either county can also order one before closing. When the report says the system failed, the next step is a repair quote.
We do not do property transfer inspections. We repair septic systems, and the company that fixes a system should not be the one that fails it. If you are buying, hire an independent inspection company that does not do repairs.
If your report already came back failed, have it in hand when you call (574) 254-7667. We look at the system and the report, then put the repair quote in writing. Our guide covers what to do after a failed septic inspection.
