Sewer Line Repair and Replacement in Mishawaka, IN

Sewer Line Repair · Mishawaka, IN

We dig down to the broken pipe and fix it

Sewer line repair starts with a pipe that has stopped carrying waste away. The sewer line runs from your house to the city sewer main or to the septic tank. Roots, cracks, sags and pulled-apart joints can all block it. Often the first sign is a backup at the lowest drain in the house.

ASAP Poop repairs and replaces sewer lines across St. Joseph County and Elkhart County. We also put in new sewer lines and switch homes from septic to sewer. We do the excavation for all of it. For some lines, trenchless pipe lining is the no-dig option.

What We Handle

  • Sewer line repair for cracked or root-filled pipe
  • Sagging and pulled-apart sections dug up and replaced
  • Full sewer line replacement from the house to the main or the tank
  • New sewer line installation out to the sewer main
  • Septic to sewer conversions that tie the house into the sewer main
  • Old septic tanks pumped and taken out of service

Sewer repair or sewer line replacement: which does your line need?

A sewer repair fixes one bad spot in the line, such as a cracked section or a root-filled joint. We dig down to that spot and replace the bad pipe.

Sewer line replacement fits a line with trouble along its length. The whole run gets new pipe, from the house to the main or the tank. When the pipe is sound and only clogged, drain cleaning may be all it needs.

Unless someone replaced it, a sewer line is as old as the house it serves. The Census puts the median year built at 1955 for South Bend housing and 1975 for Mishawaka. Half the housing in each city is older than that.

Septic to sewer conversion in St. Joseph County and Elkhart County

A septic to sewer conversion connects your house to a sewer main and takes the septic tank out of service. It can come up when a sewer main reaches your road or a septic system fails near a sewer. Under St. Joseph County's septic code, a failed system next to an available sewer gets connected to it. The sewer utility or the county health department can grant an exception.

The Indiana Department of Health's septic rule sets the steps for the old tank. The tank is pumped empty first, and our septic tank pumping trucks handle that part. Then it is pulled out, or its lid is crushed in and the tank is filled solid. The homeowner gives the county health department a receipt from the contractor as proof.

In St. Joseph County, the Department of Health issues a permit to abandon a septic system. No work may start until that permit is issued. The county's form also asks for a call to the department two hours before the work begins. In Elkhart County, ask the Elkhart County Health Department about its steps before the tank comes out.

Sewer line installation and the rules before the dig

Sewer line work means digging, and Indiana law sets the first step. Whoever digs must notify Indiana 811 at least two full working days before the work starts. Weekends and legal holidays do not count as working days. The utilities then mark their buried lines.

Those marks cover the utilities' own lines. South Bend's 311 service says Indiana 811 does not locate private lines. It lists the sewer lateral, the line from a house to the main, as privately owned.

Each city sets its own rules for a new sewer connection. In Mishawaka, the Sewer Maintenance Department inspects sewer connections for new homes. In South Bend, a new connection starts with a utility verification form that the property owner signs. Digging in the public right-of-way there needs a permit first.

FAQ

Sewer Line Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about sewer line repair around Mishawaka and the rest of St. Joseph and Elkhart Counties. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (574) 254-7667

How do I know my sewer line is broken?
Watch for several drains slowing down at once, or water coming up through a floor drain. A sewage smell or a soggy patch over the line outside points the same way. Call (574) 254-7667 and tell us what you see.
Who pays to fix the sewer line from my house to the street in Mishawaka?
Mishawaka's city page puts the lateral's upkeep, cleaning included, on the homeowner. The city also runs a sewer insurance program for single-family homes that can help with a failed lateral from the foundation wall to the main. If you are enrolled, check what it covers while we look at the line and put the repair quote in writing.
How much does sewer line repair cost?
Depth and length drive the price of a sewer line repair. A line under a driveway costs more to reach than one under grass. A conversion adds the hookup and the old tank, and our septic to sewer cost guide has market numbers. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Do I have to connect to the sewer when it reaches my road?
Indiana law lets a city with a sewer system require nearby homes to connect after written notice. The distance and the exemptions come from state law and local rules, so ask your city or sewer district. Outside South Bend's city limits, a property that hooks up to city utilities signs a consent to annexation.
Does a house on septic have a sewer line too?
Yes, Indiana's septic rule calls the pipe from the house to the tank the residential sewer. Under the rule, a 4-inch line has to fall at least 4 inches every 25 feet. A sag breaks that fall, and waste settles in the low spot. We repair and replace that line too.
